What happened
Tenants applied for an order determining that Landlords failed to meet their maintenance obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 or failed to comply with health, safety, housing or maintenance standards. There was a main drain blockage at the rental unit from January 28, 2018 to March 1, 2018, causing waste water to back up into the basement.
The ruling
The Landlords are ordered to pay the Tenants a rent abatement of $575.34, $57.00 for out of pocket expenses related to laundry, $104.00 for the reasonable costs to replace a shop vac, mop and bucket, and $50.00 for the cost of filing the application, for a total of $786.34. If the Landlords do not pay the full amount by June 26, 2018, they will owe interest at 3.00% annually on the outstanding balance.
