What happened

The Tenant applied for an order determining that the Landlords altered the locking system on a door giving entry to the rental unit or residential complex without giving the Tenant replacement keys. The Tenant was arrested and removed from the property on August 6, 2020, leaving the rental unit unsecured. The Landlords changed the lock on August 8, 2020 to secure the unit, and later re-rented the unit for September 1, 2020. The Tenant was seeking the return of the last month's rent deposit and September 2020 rent payment, as well as compensation for missing or lost belongings.

The ruling

The Landlords are ordered to pay the Tenant $1,689.03, which is the refund of the balance of the last month's rent and September 2020 rent. The Tenant's claim for compensation for missing or lost belongings is dismissed as the Tenant's pastor took possession of the belongings.
