What happened
Tenants applied for an order determining that Landlords failed to meet their maintenance obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 or failed to comply with health, safety, housing or maintenance standards. The main issue was the presence of cockroaches in the rental unit.
The ruling
The Landlords are ordered to pay the Tenants a rent abatement of $457.19 for the period from December 7, 2016 to January 24, 2017 when the Landlords failed to treat the cockroach issue. The Landlords are also ordered to fill any holes where cockroaches may gain access to the rental unit by May 12, 2017 and continue treating the unit until a 'no infestation' result is achieved.
