What happened
Tenants applied for an order determining that the Landlord failed to meet the Landlord's maintenance obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 and failed to comply with health, safety, housing or maintenance standards due to a bed bug and roach infestation in the rental unit.
The ruling
The Landlord breached its obligation under s. 20(1) of the Act to ensure the rental unit is in a good state of repair and fit for habitation due to the ongoing pest infestation. The Landlord is ordered to arrange for regular pest control treatments, and the Tenants are awarded a rent abatement of $1,170 and $297.75 in compensation for damaged property.
