What happened

Tenants applied for an order determining that the Landlord has collected or retained money illegally. The Landlord retained the Tenants' last month's rent deposit, which is prohibited by the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006.

The ruling

The Landlord is ordered to pay the Tenants $1,800 for the last month's rent deposit, and an additional $50 for the cost of filing the application. The total amount the Landlord owes the Tenants is $1,850. If the Landlord does not pay the full amount by January 15, 2021, they will owe interest at 2% annually on the outstanding balance.
