What happened

Tenant applied for an order determining that Landlords failed to meet their maintenance obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 or failed to comply with health, safety, housing or maintenance standards. The rental unit had problems with moisture, mold and recurring sewage back-ups.

The ruling

The Landlords shall pay the Tenant $4,725.60 for an abatement of rent and $45.00 for the cost of filing the application, for a total of $4,770.60, to be paid on or before May 20, 2016. If the Landlords do not pay the full amount by the due date, they will owe interest at 2% annually on the outstanding balance.
