What happened

Tenants applied for an order determining that the Landlords have collected or retained money illegally. The Tenants moved in on September 1, 2018 and vacated on January 4, 2020. The Landlords collected first and last month's rent, but did not pay interest on the rent deposit as required by the Residential Tenancies Act.

The ruling

The Landlords are ordered to pay the Tenants $14.40 for the interest owed on the rent deposit, and $50 for the cost of filing the application, for a total of $64.40. If the Landlords do not pay the full amount by June 22, 2021, they will owe simple interest at 2% annually on the outstanding balance.
