What happened
Tenants applied to determine whether the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 applies to their living arrangement with the landlord. The tenancy agreement is between the Church of Scientology of Toronto and the landlord, and the tenants are members of the church who pay rent to the landlord through the church.
The ruling
The Residential Tenancies Act does not apply to the living arrangement between the tenants and the landlord, as the tenants' occupancy is conditional upon their continued involvement with the Church of Scientology, which is a business or enterprise carried out in the building.
