What happened

Tenant applied for an order determining that Landlord has collected or retained money illegally. The Tenant signed a lease agreement with the Landlord on July 31, 2019, which required the Tenant to pay a last month's rent deposit and a $500 damage deposit. The Tenant vacated the rental unit on February 28, 2021 and requested the return of the damage deposit, but the Landlord withheld it, claiming the Tenant caused water damage.

The ruling

The Landlord is ordered to repay the Tenant the $500 damage deposit, as well as $53 for the cost of filing the application. If the Landlord does not pay the full amount by February 21, 2022, the Landlord will owe interest on the outstanding balance.
