What happened
A group of seven tenants from four different units filed a T6 application against their Landlords for failing to repair a broken dryer in the shared laundry room. The dryer stopped working in September 2023, and the Landlords, when notified, refused to repair or replace it, citing the 'economic state' of the building. The Landlords did not attend the hearing. The Tenants sought reimbursement for their out-of-pocket laundromat expenses and an order compelling the Landlords to fix the dryer.
The ruling
The Landlords are ordered to pay each of the seven Tenants $1,975.00 for out-of-pocket laundry expenses, plus $68.00 to the Tenants of Unit 3 for the application fee, by May 3, 2025. Additionally, the Landlords must repair or replace the broken dryer by May 31, 2025. If they fail to pay the monetary award, Tenants may deduct $500.00 monthly from rent. If they fail to repair the dryer, Tenants may deduct an additional $200.00 monthly from rent until the work is completed.
