What happened
The Landlord applied for eviction and rent arrears after the Tenants failed to pay rent following the loss of their Rent-Geared-to-Income (RGI) subsidy. The Tenants' monthly rent increased significantly from $229.00 to $1,031.00 in March 2025. The Tenants disputed the arrears based on the unfairness of the subsidy loss, which they are currently appealing through the housing provider's internal processes.
The ruling
The tenancy is terminated effective September 30, 2025, unless the Tenants void the order by paying the arrears. The Tenants are ordered to pay $2,481.81 if the tenancy is terminated, or a higher amount to void the order and continue the tenancy. The eviction was delayed to September 30, 2025, to accommodate the Tenants' appeal regarding their lost rent subsidy.
