What happened

Tenant applied for an order determining that Landlord collected or retained money illegally. The Tenant paid $1,700 per month in 2021 but the Landlord increased the rent to $2,000 per month in 2022 without proper notice.

The ruling

Landlord must pay Tenant $7,503 for rent illegally collected from January 1, 2022 to November 14, 2023. If Landlord does not pay by April 6, 2024, Tenant can deduct $1,700 from rent each month from May to August 2024 and $703 in September 2024.
