What happened
The case involved multiple cross-applications. The Landlord sought eviction for non-payment of rent, while the Tenants alleged severe harassment, lack of vital services (heat and internet), privacy violations, and illegal handling of their property post-eviction. The Tenants were evicted by the Sheriff on June 19, 2024. However, the Board found that the Landlord had engaged in systemic harassment, including using racial slurs, making false reports to the Children's Aid Society, stalking the tenants, and failing to secure their belongings after the eviction, resulting in significant property loss and damage.
The ruling
The Landlord is ordered to pay the Tenants a total of $29,505.35. This massive award includes a rent abatement for lack of heat, harassment, and mail interference, as well as $10,000 in general damages for mental distress and the trauma of an improper eviction process. Additionally, the Landlord must pay over $7,400 for property damage and loss after dumping the Tenants' belongings on the curb. The Landlord was also hit with $4,500 in administrative fines for his 'reprehensible' and 'deceitful' conduct.
